Frequently Asked Questions for The Travel Intern
Click here to apply for Singapore’s 1st Travel Intern.
(1) I’ll love to apply but I already have a short trip planned in the middle of December.
I’m generally flexible and this is actually a plus point! As long as we can complete tasks, I don’t see how this is an issue unless you are leaving for >1week. Depending on the exact schedule, we can always start earlier/end later/break for a week or something. I’m certain we can work something out.
(2) Will there be another internship in the future? I can’t make it for this one.
It’s hard to say, but judging from the initial responses, it seems likely. Everything also depends on how the actual internship goes. So just subscribe to my blog and you’ll know in due time! Facebook is probably the first place I’ll update. It doesn’t hurt if you want to follow my adventures on Instagram too. :P
The Travel Intern might become a permanent thing in the future!
(3) Where will the internship be held?
Maybe I wasn’t clear enough earlier, but it’ll be based here in sunny Singapore!
The sponsored travel opportunity will also be from Singapore, so I’m really sorry if you are not living here. Maybe next time I’ll have one on the road for the entire internship duration. :)
(4) What is covered in the sponsored travel opportunity?
Transport, accommodation, and some activities for sure. Food may or may not be covered depending on the sponsor, but if you’re good, I’ll probably pay for your meals and some booze!
(5) How many hours will I have to work everyday?
I don’t like to put a time to things because I’m more task orientated than time orientated. I don’t believe in pretending to be busy if you’re done with whatever needs to be done for the day. But if I had to estimate, an average person will probably take 5-6hrs a day to complete the tasks.
(6) What will I be doing on the internship?
You will photocopy papers and buy coffee. You’ll be doing the same things I do really. A large part will be writing content, but I’ll bring you through the whole process from strategy, research, content generation, to marketing. Oh yes I forgot to mention you’ll get to go on a sponsored trip and experience what it’s really like!
Btw I was kidding about the photocopying and coffee. Higher chance that I’ll be the one buying coffee actually. :)
(7) What is the “time set aside for learning” about?
For 1-2hrs a day, we’ll be improving ourselves! Sometimes I’ll share, some days you’ll share, and other days we can learn together. I believe in lifelong learning and learning something new everyday. Don’t worry too much, I’ll come out with a structure.
(8) Do I need my own laptop?
Yes. I’ll really love to provide you with one, but sadly it’s not possible at the moment. As long as your laptop can access and browse the web without problems, it’s good enough.
(9) How will you select The Travel Intern?
It will be a mixture of looking for effort in STEP 2, writing samples and fit in STEP 1, and before stalking shortlisted interns. A handful will then be picked for a Skype/phone interview before the final decision is made.
(10) What’s your MBTI?
I’m a hybrid but the closest one would probably be ENTJ. Feel free to read up more about my type.
(11) OMG are you even real and is this internship legit?
Yes you can stalk me on multiple platforms here, here, and here. My life is an open book. Internship is also as real as it gets. This is actually scarier for me because everyone knows I’m searching for an intern while you’re kind of applying anonymously. Please don’t be a psycho. D:
(12) Do you work? Where do you find your money?
Contrary to popular belief, I do work. I just happen to be able to work while traveling. It wasn’t easy, but I eventually managed to find a balance of sorts. Between/during my travels, I run a one man show media agency, focussing on graphic design, social media marketing, content marketing, and sometimes web design. I also split the time with my travel startup TripBolt. As with any startup thingy, I’m not earning a lot yet, but I’m comfortable enough for now, and not too far from my peers. Some think it’s crazy, but it’s just a tradeoff for time to work on my own projects.
(13) Is this a marketing/pr gimmick?
Well honestly… yes and no. I’m genuinely looking for some help, while at the same time see this as an opportunity to market my blog at the same time. The tech/startup people call this growth hacking!
Anyway the internship is real, and whatever I’ve mentioned will definitely happen. So hooray to a win-win situation!

Hi!
Really great opportunity here. From what I understand, it would be to commit for 1 month (Dec).
Just a question though, would there be opportunities for the Intern to be contracted to a Permanent Staff?
And simply out of curiosity, why a travel intern? (is it due to future plans you may have for this blog?)
Looking forward to your reply!
Christina
Hi Christina,
To be honest, I can’t really answer any of those questions at the moment. Although I’ve been blogging for almost 2years now, it’s only recently (just before the internship), that I’ve decided to be more serious in it. So the easy answer is hopefully yes!
With regards to why The Travel Intern, yes something is planned for Phase 2. This internship is just the beginning if it works out well. :)
Thanks so much for answering the questions!
Have just applied for the position myself via instagram (@highlyretarded).
Regardless if I get chosen, I wish you all the best in this project!
Remote working (nomad life) is not really encouraged in Singapore due to our culture, but I am glad to know that we are working towards to changing that.
All the best,
Christina
Dear Hendric,
Though I am one of the applicants for your internship.
I am curious about your travels . It’ll be nice for just coffee as friends to share views of the world and sorts.
I am an amateur traveller myself and look forward to more different perspectives in life .
Good luck for your future endeavours !
Warm regards, Danny
Hi Hendric!
From your post, I get the idea that the internship is pretty flexible. That there’s no standard time frame for it. (As in when and for how long.) Does this mean it’s really negotiable and can start and end depending on availibility? Also, if I miss this application would there be another chance in future? This sounds too fun and a great opportunity to miss!
Cheers,
Genice
Yup! It is flexible around Dec period. 5days a week for a month means about +- 20 days of work that can stretch till Jan etc.
If someone is of the right fit, I’m sure the dates can be worked out as long as it’s around that time.
Answer to whether theres a future opportunity is in the FAQ!
Hi Hendric,
Would there still be a chance if i dont have much travelling experience beforehand?
Thank u for replying! :)
That isn’t a pre-requisite!
Hi,
A quick question, as I am working full time now, to go for the internship requires me to take 20 days of leave but currently my remaining days of leave is about 17 days, should I still apply?
Thanks (:
Hey Jo,
Definitely not advisable! I say it mainly because everything will be confirmed really late and the lead time will be short. Wouldn’t be fair to your employer for that.
Also just to set expectations, prob slightly more than half of the time you’ll be working in Singapore.
Although there’s no specific age limit nor work status, the internship is geared more towards tertiary students and those between jobs.
Hope this helps!
Thank you for your kind response!!!
This is certainly a very interesting internship!
All the best!
Hello there Hendric!!
This is really a good opportunity you’re providing to potential interns! Am finishing my final term from Murdoch end of this year majoring in hospitality & tourism and working full time in a hospital. Wish that i fit your criteria though! I do have my own laptop and stuff unfortunately I don’t blog. I mostly travel with my travel buddy and i Instagram our travels.
Good luck in looking for your potential candidate!
Hey Jolynn!
If there’s a way you can show your writing in either step 1 or 2 you can still apply! :)
hey there!
I’m majoring in mass communication and is keen to join the team. Just wondering whether you offer long period of time internships? say for 20 weeks?
cheers!
Hey Siti,
You sound like you’re from NTU WKWSCI. If yes hello alumni here! If not #awkward.
Anyway nope I don’t think it’s a formal enough program yet to be considered by schools. Currently it’s more like a I quite internship experience.
I’m not sure if I’ll create a longer program, but who knows what will happen in the future.
Hope this helps in answering your questions.
hey! I LOVE to admit that I am from NTU and make it less awkward, but… I sometimes I enjoyed making people awkkkward~
Ok enough of that. On a serious note, thanks for replying!
Hi Hendric Goodday!
I have always looking forward to have a opportunity to experience different lifestyle, and then my travel cells are all triggered after reading your post!
But I think it would be good to surrender here first before applying, so that it don’t give you an “extra work” to filter the best candidate later :)
Generally, I did own a blog-aka-personal diary few years back but it was in mandarin basis. I may not write better than you but I believe you dont need a journalist kind of writter,or… do you? hahaa..
To be frank, Im now working a full-time job but due to the shift pattern , Im able to off 3 and 4 days each alternative week.
Im not sure if it is fine as to fulfill the intern requirement, so .. yah…waiting for you to shoot out your point of view :)
Hey YS,
I must say it’ll be tough though. Because not only do we have our own schedules to deconflict, we will have to deconflict with the sponsors as well as the dates are all not firmed up yet.
So unfortunately I will say it’s tough. Technically you can apply, but I will be lying if I said that those who can commit more won’t have an advantage.
Hope this answers your question!
Hi, thanks for your reply Hendric. :)
I believe there is someone who can commit well to this job than me..and I wish you could find the best one soon.
But still…I hope there will be opportunities to work with you in the future. cheers and good luck :)
hi,
How i wish I can be a travel intern as I’ve loved travelling, meeting people, taking photos and well do some web and graphic designing before.
I travel to release stress, I travel, even if it’s just a very short crazy trip, I do it. Or cook in my spare time.
