The Search for Singapore’s 1st Travel Intern
Yup it’s a paid internship and you get to travel.
For the latest updates and announcements, click here.
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to travel for a living? To be paid or sponsored to go on holidays? To collect experiences that many people may not have?
It sounds super shiok, but it’s really more than pretending that your life is perfect taking pictures, writing reviews, and constantly flying around.
You have to get your hands dirty, dabble in a variety of fields, and make personal sacrifices. If this still sounds like something you might be interested in, this internship might just be perfect for you.
My name is Hendric, and it’s been about 2 years since I quit my 9-5 job to travel the world. Since then, I’ve travelled to 16 countries, done 19 trips, and spent a third of my time on the road.
While frolicking with sea lions in South America, feasting on the freshest sushi in Japan, and more recently taking a 2 week yoga course in India, I started and maintained this blog. The initial intention was to simply chronicle my experiences while encouraging more to travel and live in the moment. Fast forward to the present, I’ve been fortunate enough to win the OMY Best Travel Blog Award in 2015, and work with brands like FlyScoot and Airbnb.
With such encouraging signs, I’ve decided to take the travel blog a step further. A big revamp is due, and this is where you come in.
It isn’t exactly normal for travel blogs to hire interns, but hey this isn’t a normal internship. This is the search for Singapore’s 1st ever Travel Intern!
What you’re in for
- At least 1 sponsored travel opportunity within Southeast Asia.
- A one-of-a-kind internship experience you can add to your resume (wish this was available when I was in school).
- A first hand opportunity to learn about travel blogging, content marketing, and social media marketing (there’ll be time set aside everyday for learning).
- A flexible working arrangement (yes it’s ok even if you have your own short trip in the middle of the internship). The internship will be based in Singapore. Most of the time we will work together, but there will be times when you can work remotely as well.
- An allowance of SGD$600.
Who I’m looking for
You should ideally:
- Love to travel (duh).
- Commit full-time, 5 days a week for the month of December. I’m generally flexible, but please read FAQ for common permutations.
- Be super interested in travel blogging and an alternative lifestyle.
- Have a blog or written blog content before.
- Write better than me and with personality (honestly not difficult).
- Be social media savvy (FB/IG/SC) and basic background in the field of marketing.
- Be task orientated and can work independently on your own laptop.
- Be able to take some “uncertainty” and think on your feet. All in the spirit of travel!
- Be fun and pleasant to work with.
- Compulsory: Have a passport with >6 months of validity (exact travel dates to be discussed), and living in Singapore during the internship period.

Highlight your personality and show why you should be Singapore’s 1st Travel Intern!
Tip: New posts will definitely stand out more than just hashtagging older posts :)

Hi,
I am interested to be the intern but there are some criteria that i don’t fit such as : ‘Have a blog or written blog content before’ AND ‘be task orientated and can work independently on your own laptop’. I am task orientated but i don’t own any laptop. Other than that i’m all good.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Cheers,
Syafiq
Hi Syafiq,
Thanks for your interests! Blog writing is quite a big part of it so I’ll be using your previous sample writings to gauge. It’ll be hard to gauge without anything.
As for the laptop part, sorry but it’s required for this because I do not have enough resources to provide. :/
Hi! Keen in applying, have my own laptop, but never once started writing about my travels :( (usually I keep a personal diary, nothing official though!)
Absolutely love making impromptu trips, been to Hanoi and Mumbai (on impulse because it’s trips like these that give me ultimate fulfillment!!!!)
Do I still make the cut? (Since prior writings are really a must…)
En Qi :)
Hello En Qi,
If there’s a way you can still show me your writing, either in Step 1 or 2 it’ll be ok!
Im interested!
Keen! I just spent 5 weeks travelling around Singapore and would do it again. I haven’t written specific blog content but worked in a marketing role requiring content writing :)
Helooooooo there!
Omg u dont know how excited i was when i saw this article. It’s like unwrapping of Christmas gift like a kid while i was reading thru the content of this page! I am starting a travel blog too, but ive not publish nor write anything yet. It’s just the home page that i was fiddling around with wordpress. The idea was to share my travel stories, the do’s and dont’s, budget, itinery, amazing pictures, sharing of other travellers stories and etc! Been travelling out on a mthly basis since January, on a solo or a pair. Taking unpaid leave this Dec to Feb for my solo bagpacking trip ard Oz and then to Cebu. You can check out my #fytravelogue #fywanderland post in IG. And nice picture uve got there of ur “office”. Amazing isnt it?
Time to start writing! :)
Thanks for your comments! Are you applying?
Of course i am! Wait till i get home and get my hands on my laptop. Wait for my application!!! YOLO! :) :) :)
Hello,
I’m Nadia from Indonesia. I really love travelling, and I always think where can I find a job like you have. So I interested for this intern opportunity, but I have problem that I don’t live in Singapore, am I still can join this?
Thanks!
Hey Nadia,
The nationality doesn’t matter, but I do need the person to be in Singapore. Sorry!
How long is this internship? Is it open to Malaysians as well? Where is it based Coz I’m in the UK now haha.
Hi Deborah,
It’s about a month and will be based off Singapore. Nationality is not an issue as long as you are here!
Hola Hendric,
This is such an attractive opportunity!!! I’m supper interested in being a travel intern. Unfortunately I won’t be in Singapore during Dec because I have made my travel plan:((( Haha, need to grab any chance to travel:P
Just wondering if you are still interested in finding an intern in Jan 2016 or something?
Looking forward your reply:)
Danling
Hi Danling,
Short answer is maybe! Jan unlikely though, I might need a break after the first internship. Haha. Full answer is already in the FAQ. :)
Hi
The application form isn’t showing up on the page when the link is being clicked on.
Hey Shalyn,
Works fine on my side! It’s prob either something on your side or that it temporarily stopped working due to the heavy volume of traffic I’m getting now.
Hi Hendric.
I think I would be a perfect fit for this internship. I have travelled solo on a backpacking trip through cambodia, laos, thailand. I’ve explored parts of australia and lived in Melbourne for 6 months in 2013. I have travelled to some parts of europe mainly the netherlands. Above all this I have experience in writing blog entries as I am currently writing articles for a local blog here in Singapore. I’m interested in working with you and learning more from you.
What are you waiting for! Step 1 and Step 2 is waiting for you!
AWESOMEEE !! Am currently in my gap year know, however I’d ‘accidentally’ scheduled my December to be quite packed, any chances that you need any travel intern let say around January 2016? Can’t believe this man! It’s happening and we should totally make it into a culture norm, well, at least for me. Teeeheee! :)
Hi Florence,
Short answer is maybe! Though Jan unlikely maybe later. Full answer is already in the FAQ. :)
Hi there! Just wanted to ask if you would be looking for interns even after december as ill be on holiday during the whole month. I really hope so as this seems like an amazing opportunity! Thank you! :-)
Hi Rukmini,
Short answer is maybe! Full answer is already in the FAQ. :)
Hey … Im really keen to join it. However , I only be free after 11 December . I love traveling a lot and i do personal review about my travel and advice.
If the timing is negotiable on your side and we extend to Jan it’s ok too. :)
Hi Hendric! You’ve created the dream internship for one very lucky person. I’m an undergrad in NUS Business and I’ll be backpacking solo through Europe alone this December. I was curious about whether you’d be interested in hiring more people after the application window, but you’ve already answered in the comment above. Anyway, abandoning a stable income to travel is bada$$. It takes balls of steel. Or fire. Or one ball of steel and one of fire. Or both of steel, shooting fire. I’m truly envious of your fiery balls and I’m glad to have stumbled across your site. Wishing you the best of luck in finding the intern of your dreams. Through customs and in health, till visa complications do us part. Have a good weekend!
Dearest Steph,
You just made my night. I must say that you must have some fiery balls to be traveling around alone too. But then you can’t possibly have… wait… is steph your real name? D: D: D:
Hendric
P.S. The Travel Intern might become a permanent thing and there are plans for expansion. Keep in touch!
Hello!
Thank you for opening up this opportunity it really does sound amazing. I love travelling and meeting people along the way. I do have a blog but its really personal entries and only a couple of posts about travelling. Should I create another travel blog? Thank you! :)
Sincerely
Bethany
Hey Bethany,
You don’t have to. I just needed to see some of your sample writing. When completing Step 1, you can just add a public post under the blog question. :)
Hello there Hendric,
This is such an amazing opportunity!!!! I love how someone out there is going to get the chance to do something as incredible as this because of your courage in pursuing something like that. I’m really looking for something to do during my holidays in December (jobstreet pales in comparison to this obviously) but can’t seem to find anything that keeps to the month of December and also makes me as interested as this. (I mean actually dancing a happy dance upon seeing this)
I’ve previously back packed in Europe for 3 weeks in 2013, went to 8 counties and 13 cities. I’ve also been to many counties in Asia itself but I guess I’ll leave these details in the form.
The reason I have not filled up those forms is because I will not be available from Dec 5-13, a solid 1.5 weeks because I’ll be, well, travelling. This seems apt here… kinda
Well anyway let me know if I should fill in the forms anyway or not waste your time!
Toodles,
Ashleen
Oh hello there again, sorry but I just read your FAQ and it says not more than a week and my trip is actually 9 days, not 1.5 weeks! Hopefully this increases my chances, yes? ;)
Wha tough. 1.5weeks is really a little challenging. That said, I’m trying to find the perfect fit for the first internship, which is why I’m trying to be flexible with the time.
If you like, you can apply and add your sample writing (thats one of the top things I’m looking out for)? More importantly is Step 2. The 1.5weeks away will definitely affect a little, but if you are confident, can apply anyway.
What if i’m gonna be in Thailand from 16/12 to 5/1? :(
:(. 2 weeks is really quite long.
You dont ned one for next year? :(
Im a recent ntu grad who’s still unemployed cos … I suck
Hey Ping,
Not sure yet cause a lot depends on how this one goes. Just keep a look out for it.
And hey don’t give up! It’s normal for us to be a little lost after graduating. Don’t be too had on yourself. Keep fighting the good fight!
i really want to write so let me know!!
Hi Hendric,
I was wondering where I could send my resume and publication list (total of 82 articles over 6 pages long hehe) to via email. Look forward to hearing from you!
Gary
I wouldn’t want to read so many! haha.
Just check out Steps 1 & 2. It’s more than enough for me. :)
Hi Hendric!
I am interested in joining this with you but sadly I didn’t manage to have a blog to write about my travel experiences. As I did not have any chance to get to travel as much as I can due to my studies. However, I will be graduating from Murdoch university in the early December. Traveling have been everyone’s hobby and of course it’s mine too! Nevertheless, with blogs and social media, it allows me to share my great experience around the world. I hope you can provide me this opportunity, cheers!
Hey Jinger,
The details are in the post! if you think it still applies to you, feel free to submit your entry! Competition is pretty tough though. So every bit counts. Hope this helps!
Hi Hendric!
It’s awesome to see someone looking for a travel intern, especially since it’s been a fantasy of mine for a really long time but due to many societal norms of Singapore I’ve put off that dream for a while now. Am new to your blog but have just read through several of your posts and your courage to forgo stability to pursue something you hold dear have re-invigorated me to listen to my heart.
I was initially stoked for my travels in December but knowing I won’t be able to give this internship a shot was a real bummer! :(
Read in the FAQ that you may be doing this again in the future. All the best for this first internship (truly lucky fella) whoever he/she may be!
Looking forward to your future postings!
Thanks Darren! Comments like this really mean a lot. :)
Hi! I’m interest. I love to travel and have written some pieces on my website here. Horrible design and domain just expired. I’m graduating next year and will be off traveling for years. Hahah I was thinking I can partner with you. To be honest, I’m a trader so I don’t really need that $600 allowance. I thought it will be interesting to work out something with you. Cheers :)
Hi! I love to travel and I’ll be graduating next year and after I’ll be traveling. I got my website there. Horrible design and lack of updates due to school. However, I have definitely been traveling for all of my holiday. I trade forex for a living which allows me to work remotely so Im not really concern about the allowance. I thought we might work something out.
Hey Jy,
You commented twice so I didn’t know which to reply to. I’ve met a few traders on the road too! It’s a great way to support your travels to be honest. Unfortunately I don’t have that flair.
Anyway do let me know what you have in mind. Just drop me a mail or FB message and we can try to take it from there.
Wow you are living the life i have always dreamed of! Since wanderlust is in my blood, i have kept blogs on travel and personal since secondary school but stopped when i started working in the corporate world.
The awesome and maybe scary part? I also have made the decision to quit my full time job to pursue a more flexible lifestyle and just having some basic plan of what i am going to do.
I am still serving my notice till mid Dec and then have made plans for travel. Its a pity to miss this opportunity to learn from you! Hopefully there is a chance next time then!
All the best to you and whoever the lucky person is!
Awww. Thanks for your encouragement. Well you never know. A second internship might come up. Stay tuned!
Hello!
Am pretty stoked that you are offering this opportunity. I would fit in all your requirements BUT I would be working full time in Dec. I will be done in Feb though so I will be free after that if you are interested to do this again..:)
Oh, btw, I had commented earlier on your blog about the work holiday visa for NZ since I’m already 30. Happy to let you know that I’ve also managed to get it! :)
That’s great! Wha I think that post was some time ago?
I’m not sure about a second internship at the moment as we’ll have to see how the first one goes! But things are looking promising. :)
Hey! I’m keen. But I’m more of a videographer and capture the moment with my camera kind of guy. I have met all of the requirements but the writing. Can I substitute my videos in place for my writing??
Joshua
Hey Joshua!
Unfortunately that’s not one of the criteria for this round. Maybe next time!
um.. i’m interested. However, i’m still completing my diploma in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. It’s my last semester though.
So i’m wondering if i’m eligible.
Hey Zi Jing,
Might be hard if you’re still having your full time studies. Don’t worry there will be plenty of opportunities to travel in the future!
I did a solo travel to 3 continents.
Overseas volunteer work. The rest with friends and family.
Travel 3 times a year.
Don’t really write yet but plan to retire in 3 years just to do traveling.
Is this open to indonesian? I used to study in singapore and been travelled to 23 countries. Yes i love travelling ofc :) thank you :)
answer is in faq too! :)
Hello, I am interested but in December I’ll be traveling Asia too. I’m still on my travel journey, I’ll be back in January. Is that okay? I’ve been traveling since end of Aug or early Sep. :-) Instagram @l3eecheng
answer is in faq! :)
I’ve filled the form and #TheTravelIntern on Instagram. Instagram: l3eecheng but I’m still traveling Asia. My backpacking will end mid January. I hope I’m still eligible..
hi dionne, answer is in faq! :)
I will be flying to NZ from 29th Nov – 14th Dec which thereafter, I will be having a long haul from work till end of January. Read your FAQ, you stated that we can make something out if it’s less than a week. How about my case? :)
I believe other than the schedule issues, I do fit your criteria! Looking forward to hear from you. It will be great to travel with the expert!
Hi Jessy,
There’s a chance it might be possible. But definitely those who can make it for the bulk of the duration will have an advantage. Thanks!
I love this idea. I dun think I qualify. I’m still learning to write a travel blog. My english skills not too good.
But love what you are doing. I hope I can have my travel blog too.
Love to meet in person, if you dun mind to share your experiences, skills, how to write a good travel blog.
don’t give up!
Hey, I am keen but wondering if I am qualified for it. I had been doing translation jobs for a travel magazine for quite a while now. Thus, I am not sure whether I am eligible for it?
Hey Fernando,
It’s hard to tell because I don’t have enough information based on what you have told me. There are two steps to the initial application process.
Step 1: Fill in the form. The key is to show your personality in those short questions. It’ll help a lot if you have some writing samples online to attach. Online and Print writing is quite different.
Step 2: Somehow you’ll need to catch my attention here. I’m been blessed with the response so far, but has much as I would like to read every single entry, it would be challenging for me to look through all. Like any other job interview, you need to capture the attention! I chose social media as a platform because that is an important part for any blogger.
Hope this helps!
Hi there! I’m interested in applying for the internship but I’ll be out of the country in December. May I ask if there would be more opportunities like this in the future?
Thanks for your time!
Hi Jesper,
Short answer maybe. Long answer is in the FAQ!
Hi Hendric,
Thanks for the reply! Will fill in the form asap. Thanks!
Hi Hendric,
I think you have missed out on my reply.
Hey Hendric!
Aw I’ve just read some of the other comments on this post, and it’s really exciting to see how much energy you’ve stirred up with this job offer. You can see that it’s definitely rekindled a lot of people’s passion for travel. And who knows; you might have done it at a right time for those who’s been waiting for a sign to encourage them to take an off the beaten track. Haha, what i’m trying to say is that it’s an internship for one, but i’m sure you’ve inspired many.
Anyway! so I was actually dropping by with a question. This is theeeee question:
I’m very interested in this internship and have followed through with the application steps. But I don’t think my instagram post is showing up on the hashtag grid. I know for a fact that broken hashtags do occur, and with these sometimes they don’t display certain uploads. So if this is the case, i was just wondering if there are any other recommended ways to have you consider my post.
Hahaha, I don’t know how to put it any other way that doesn’t make me sound like i’m seeking for attention. Because I am! hahahaha.
I hope you have a lovely day,
Kind regards,
Miao
Hi Miao!
I think it will be impossible to stand out if you don’t try. Been really overwhelmed by the responses so far! haha.
Anyway, could it be because your profile is private? It wouldn’t show if it was. Another common thing I noticed people doing i tagging older photos, which pushes it all the way down the grid. Instagram displays them either by top posts (most likes), and recency.
If it’s a bug, then I’ll suggest you somehow upload it again or use FB!
hope this helps :)
Yea! I can see that! nearly 900 applications to sort through. Well since you’ve given me the green light i’m going to try and draw your attention to my post in any way that I can, haha.
I reckon it’s a bug, but it’s alright i’ll find a way around it!
Thanks for the quick reply!
Hi Hendric! I have just completed the application form but I would like to include another sample of a personal travel reflection, I noticed I could only upload one sample writing on the form, is it possible for me to email this to you? Or I can link you the post on my FB page?
I think linking with the hashtag would be best! :)
This was a pretty personal reflection written over a year ago and I’m not quite sure I’m comfortable with sharing it publicly but I would love for you to read it to understand my writing style. Let me know how I can get this to you! :)
Good day, really interested in this topic. Generally I’m better with travel photograhy than blogging. Something interesting about myself, overland in africa for 6months, traveled madagascar , azerbaijian , mexico , bulgaria, ethiopia and other 30 more countries including asia, north america, europe and oceania. Work and live in NZ for 8 months. Don’t have a blog, would love to do freelance photography. Had some lovely photos from Namibia, south africa, sudan, tanzania you might want to check it out.
Hi Hendric
Can I just confirm that the deadline for submission for post 1 and 2 is 25 November, next Wednesday? :)
Yup!
its really nice to know this chance, tho I will be in NYC at that moment, which is very pity,
I’m a travel blogger ,too (release recently :P) your blog gave me a lot of inspirations ,
hope can work with you one day :) cheers.
Zoey
Thanks Zoey. It’s indeed a pity. Look out for future opportunities!
Hi, I submitted an application but I changed my website’s domain. So if there is anyway for me to inform you of the new domain, please let me know. :)
Hi Xenia,
You can reply here or send a PM on Pohtecktoes page. :)
Hello Hendric,
As I have not written any blogs for the longest time as I tend to note down on instagram mostly.
It’s usually a paragraph long or so. Will that do?
Do whatever you think is best to get you the job!
dang… I would apply since I am doing freelance for now but too bad, have plans this X’mas in Sg follows by trip to HKG for the New Year’s Eve countdown on a chinese junk boat.
Also, just got back from a 12 days trip in India and Sri Lanka.
Hey Hendric,
Does it have to be the whole month of December?
I am really keen but am away from X’mas till the 3 Jan 2016.
Hi Kevin,
The dates you have look favourable. Do apply. :)
If i have never written for a blog will i still be able to join?
I may not have written a blog but i studied journalism so i had to do tons of writing as well.
As long as you can show your writing somehow definitely!
Hi I forgot to link my Instagram account to my application, so I’ve put it as my website in this comment. Thank you.
Dear Hendric,
My name is Keith Tan Wei Qin. I have included the incorrect link to my Linkedin profile in my application. This is the correct link to my profile: https://sg.linkedin.com/in/keith-tan-wei-qin-41a6b2105
Do check it out when you have the time.
Thank you.
Regard,
Keith Tan Wei Qin

Hi Shaun,
I just resent it. :)
Hi there, may I know is this travel intern job still applicable for apply? :D

Hi Hendric,
Could I enquire as to when the next round of internships will commence?

Hi Hendric, I just came across this page and I’d love to apply for your internship once there’s a new offer, but until then, it would be great to just talk to you. I’ve just started my own travel blog (janina.lu, unfortunately it’s in German only so far, but maybe you want to check out at least the pictures for now) and I have some experience in writing and photography. I’m sure you’d be able to give me some great advice, so feel free to check out my website and contact me through there. Would be amazing to actually hear from you! :D
