The Search for Singapore’s 1st Travel Intern

Yup it’s a paid internship and you get to travel.

For the latest updates and announcements, click here.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to travel for a living? To be paid or sponsored to go on holidays? To collect experiences that many people may not have?

It sounds super shiok, but it’s really more than pretending that your life is perfect taking pictures, writing reviews, and constantly flying around.

You have to get your hands dirty, dabble in a variety of fields, and make personal sacrifices. If this still sounds like something you might be interested in, this internship might just be perfect for you.

pohtecktoes

My name is Hendric, and it’s been about 2 years since I quit my 9-5 job to travel the world. Since then, I’ve travelled to 16 countries, done 19 trips, and spent a third of my time on the road.

While frolicking with sea lions in South America, feasting on the freshest sushi in Japan, and more recently taking a 2 week yoga course in India, I started and maintained this blog. The initial intention was to simply chronicle my experiences while encouraging more to travel and live in the moment. Fast forward to the present, I’ve been fortunate enough to win the OMY Best Travel Blog Award in 2015, and work with brands like FlyScoot and Airbnb.

With such encouraging signs, I’ve decided to take the travel blog a step further. A big revamp is due, and this is where you come in.

It isn’t exactly normal for travel blogs to hire interns, but hey this isn’t a normal internship. This is the search for Singapore’s 1st ever Travel Intern!

Phu Quoc Island Plane

What you’re in for

  • At least 1 sponsored travel opportunity within Southeast Asia.
  • A one-of-a-kind internship experience you can add to your resume (wish this was available when I was in school).
  • A first hand opportunity to learn about travel blogging, content marketing, and social media marketing (there’ll be time set aside everyday for learning).
  • A flexible working arrangement (yes it’s ok even if you have your own short trip in the middle of the internship). The internship will be based in Singapore. Most of the time we will work together, but there will be times when you can work remotely as well.
  • An allowance of SGD$600.

Who I’m looking for

You should ideally:

  • Love to travel (duh).
  • Commit full-time, 5 days a week for the month of December. I’m generally flexible, but please read FAQ for common permutations.
  • Be super interested in travel blogging and an alternative lifestyle.
  • Have a blog or written blog content before.
  • Write better than me and with personality (honestly not difficult).
  • Be social media savvy (FB/IG/SC) and basic background in the field of marketing.
  • Be task orientated and can work independently on your own laptop.
  • Be able to take some “uncertainty” and think on your feet. All in the spirit of travel!
  • Be fun and pleasant to work with.
  • Compulsory: Have a passport with >6 months of validity (exact travel dates to be discussed), and living in Singapore during the internship period.

See also: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I’m in! How to apply?

Step 1: Fill in this beautiful form.

Step 2: Create your own post and catch my attention on social media (FB & IG only). It can be a travel picture, video introduction, or anything you want. The only requirement is to hashtag #TheTravelIntern.

Highlight your personality and show why you should be Singapore’s 1st Travel Intern!

Tip: New posts will definitely stand out more than just hashtagging older posts :)

Timeline

  • Now: Fill in the form and create your post! The earlier you send, the more time I will have to stalk assess your qualifications.
  • 25th November: Deadline for submissions. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for a Skype/Phone interview.
  • 29th November: Announcement of Singapore’s 1st Travel Intern on this post.

What are you waiting for?
TRAVEL INTERN WANTED.

Got a question that’s not in the FAQ? Ask in the comments section below or private message me and I’ll try my best to answer. Make sure you check that it’s not in the FAQ section first though.

If you’re a potential sponsor, do drop me a mail and I’d love to discuss further. Other things are brewing too.

Oh and do share this with anyone that may be a good fit too! :)

My office for the day. Only problem – no powerpoints. #nomad #travel #kohsamui

    Hi,

I am interested to be the intern but there are some criteria that i don’t fit such as : ‘Have a blog or written blog content before’ AND ‘be task orientated and can work independently on your own laptop’. I am task orientated but i don’t own any laptop. Other than that i’m all good.

Hope to hear from you soon.

    Cheers,

      Hi Syafiq,

Thanks for your interests! Blog writing is quite a big part of it so I’ll be using your previous sample writings to gauge. It’ll be hard to gauge without anything.

As for the laptop part, sorry but it’s required for this because I do not have enough resources to provide. :/

Hi! Keen in applying, have my own laptop, but never once started writing about my travels :( (usually I keep a personal diary, nothing official though!)

Absolutely love making impromptu trips, been to Hanoi and Mumbai (on impulse because it’s trips like these that give me ultimate fulfillment!!!!)

Do I still make the cut? (Since prior writings are really a must…)

    Helooooooo there!
Omg u dont know how excited i was when i saw this article. It’s like unwrapping of Christmas gift like a kid while i was reading thru the content of this page! I am starting a travel blog too, but ive not publish nor write anything yet. It’s just the home page that i was fiddling around with wordpress. The idea was to share my travel stories, the do’s and dont’s, budget, itinery, amazing pictures, sharing of other travellers stories and etc! Been travelling out on a mthly basis since January, on a solo or a pair. Taking unpaid leave this Dec to Feb for my solo bagpacking trip ard Oz and then to Cebu. You can check out my #fytravelogue #fywanderland post in IG. And nice picture uve got there of ur “office”. Amazing isnt it?

    Hi Hendric.
I think I would be a perfect fit for this internship. I have travelled solo on a backpacking trip through cambodia, laos, thailand. I’ve explored parts of australia and lived in Melbourne for 6 months in 2013. I have travelled to some parts of europe mainly the netherlands. Above all this I have experience in writing blog entries as I am currently writing articles for a local blog here in Singapore. I’m interested in working with you and learning more from you.

Hi Hendric! You’ve created the dream internship for one very lucky person. I’m an undergrad in NUS Business and I’ll be backpacking solo through Europe alone this December. I was curious about whether you’d be interested in hiring more people after the application window, but you’ve already answered in the comment above. Anyway, abandoning a stable income to travel is bada$$. It takes balls of steel. Or fire. Or one ball of steel and one of fire. Or both of steel, shooting fire. I’m truly envious of your fiery balls and I’m glad to have stumbled across your site. Wishing you the best of luck in finding the intern of your dreams. Through customs and in health, till visa complications do us part. Have a good weekend!

    Hello there Hendric,

This is such an amazing opportunity!!!! I love how someone out there is going to get the chance to do something as incredible as this because of your courage in pursuing something like that. I’m really looking for something to do during my holidays in December (jobstreet pales in comparison to this obviously) but can’t seem to find anything that keeps to the month of December and also makes me as interested as this. (I mean actually dancing a happy dance upon seeing this)

I’ve previously back packed in Europe for 3 weeks in 2013, went to 8 counties and 13 cities. I’ve also been to many counties in Asia itself but I guess I’ll leave these details in the form.

The reason I have not filled up those forms is because I will not be available from Dec 5-13, a solid 1.5 weeks because I’ll be, well, travelling. This seems apt here… kinda

Well anyway let me know if I should fill in the forms anyway or not waste your time!

    Toodles,
    Ashleen

Wha tough. 1.5weeks is really a little challenging. That said, I’m trying to find the perfect fit for the first internship, which is why I’m trying to be flexible with the time.

If you like, you can apply and add your sample writing (thats one of the top things I’m looking out for)? More importantly is Step 2. The 1.5weeks away will definitely affect a little, but if you are confident, can apply anyway.

I am interested in joining this with you but sadly I didn’t manage to have a blog to write about my travel experiences. As I did not have any chance to get to travel as much as I can due to my studies. However, I will be graduating from Murdoch university in the early December. Traveling have been everyone’s hobby and of course it’s mine too! Nevertheless, with blogs and social media, it allows me to share my great experience around the world. Hi Hendric!

It’s awesome to see someone looking for a travel intern, especially since it’s been a fantasy of mine for a really long time but due to many societal norms of Singapore I’ve put off that dream for a while now. Am new to your blog but have just read through several of your posts and your courage to forgo stability to pursue something you hold dear have re-invigorated me to listen to my heart.
I was initially stoked for my travels in December but knowing I won’t be able to give this internship a shot was a real bummer! :(
Read in the FAQ that you may be doing this again in the future. All the best for this first internship (truly lucky fella) whoever he/she may be!

Hi! I love to travel and I’ll be graduating next year and after I’ll be traveling. I got my website there. Horrible design and lack of updates due to school. However, I have definitely been traveling for all of my holiday. I trade forex for a living which allows me to work remotely so Im not really concern about the allowance. The awesome and maybe scary part? I also have made the decision to quit my full time job to pursue a more flexible lifestyle and just having some basic plan of what i am going to do.
I am still serving my notice till mid Dec and then have made plans for travel. Its a pity to miss this opportunity to learn from you! Hopefully there is a chance next time then!

I will be flying to NZ from 29th Nov – 14th Dec which thereafter, I will be having a long haul from work till end of January. Read your FAQ, you stated that we can make something out if it’s less than a week. How about my case? :)

I believe other than the schedule issues, I do fit your criteria! Looking forward to hear from you. It will be great to travel with the expert!

      Hi Jessy,

There’s a chance it might be possible. But definitely those who can make it for the bulk of the duration will have an advantage. Thanks!

Hey, I am keen but wondering if I am qualified for it. I had been doing translation jobs for a travel magazine for quite a while now. Thus, I am not sure whether I am eligible for it?

      Hey Fernando,

It’s hard to tell because I don’t have enough information based on what you have told me. There are two steps to the initial application process.

Step 1: Fill in the form. The key is to show your personality in those short questions. It’ll help a lot if you have some writing samples online to attach. Online and Print writing is quite different.

Step 2: Somehow you’ll need to catch my attention here. I’m been blessed with the response so far, but has much as I would like to read every single entry, it would be challenging for me to look through all. Like any other job interview, you need to capture the attention! I chose social media as a platform because that is an important part for any blogger.

      Hope this helps!

Hi there! I’m interested in applying for the internship but I’ll be out of the country in December. May I ask if there would be more opportunities like this in the future?

    Thanks for your time!

    Hey Hendric!

Aw I’ve just read some of the other comments on this post, and it’s really exciting to see how much energy you’ve stirred up with this job offer. You can see that it’s definitely rekindled a lot of people’s passion for travel. And who knows; you might have done it at a right time for those who’s been waiting for a sign to encourage them to take an off the beaten track. Haha, what i’m trying to say is that it’s an internship for one, but i’m sure you’ve inspired many.

Anyway! so I was actually dropping by with a question. This is theeeee question:
I’m very interested in this internship and have followed through with the application steps. But I don’t think my instagram post is showing up on the hashtag grid. I know for a fact that broken hashtags do occur, and with these sometimes they don’t display certain uploads. So if this is the case, i was just wondering if there are any other recommended ways to have you consider my post.

Hahaha, I don’t know how to put it any other way that doesn’t make me sound like i’m seeking for attention. Because I am! hahahaha.

I hope you have a lovely day,
    Kind regards,
    Miao

      Hi Miao!

I think it will be impossible to stand out if you don’t try. Been really overwhelmed by the responses so far! haha.
Anyway, could it be because your profile is private? It wouldn’t show if it was. Another common thing I noticed people doing i tagging older photos, which pushes it all the way down the grid. Instagram displays them either by top posts (most likes), and recency.

If it’s a bug, then I’ll suggest you somehow upload it again or use FB!

      hope this helps :)

Yea! I can see that! nearly 900 applications to sort through. Well since you’ve given me the green light i’m going to try and draw your attention to my post in any way that I can, haha.

        I reckon it’s a bug, but it’s alright i’ll find a way around it!

        Thanks for the quick reply!

Hi Hendric! I have just completed the application form but I would like to include another sample of a personal travel reflection, I noticed I could only upload one sample writing on the form, is it possible for me to email this to you? Or I can link you the post on my FB page?

Good day, really interested in this topic. Generally I’m better with travel photograhy than blogging. Something interesting about myself, overland in africa for 6months, traveled madagascar , azerbaijian , mexico , bulgaria, ethiopia and other 30 more countries including asia, north america, europe and oceania. Work and live in NZ for 8 months. Don’t have a blog, would love to do freelance photography. Had some lovely photos from Namibia, south africa, sudan, tanzania you might want to check it out.

    Hello Hendric,

As I have not written any blogs for the longest time as I tend to note down on instagram mostly.
It’s usually a paragraph long or so. Will that do?

Hi Hendric, I just came across this page and I’d love to apply for your internship once there’s a new offer, but until then, it would be great to just talk to you. I’ve just started my own travel blog (janina.lu, unfortunately it’s in German only so far, but maybe you want to check out at least the pictures for now) and I have some experience in writing and photography. I’m sure you’d be able to give me some great advice, so feel free to check out my website and contact me through there. Would be amazing to actually hear from you! :D
