I’ve driven many times on my travels before… but on sand? That’s a first. I mean why do a normal road trip to see sights when you can drive on paradise itself. During my recent trip to Queensland with FlyScoot, we managed just that!
The full Great Beach Drive is a 200km drive on white sandy beaches in Queensland, with the beautiful Pacific Ocean on one side and natural Australian bushland on the other. We only did the Fraser Island portion (waypoint 2 & 3 on the map), which is about 1/3 of the entire Great Beach Drive), but it really got us wishing we could do the entire route.
So what’s so great about The Great Beach Drive?
(1) Freedom and challenge of driving on sand
Imagine the exhilaration of driving on miles and miles of stunning sandy beaches with the wind in your hair. We were on a 3D2N 4WD Tag Along self drive tour (only 4WDs are allowed for The Great Beach Drive), and it was so much fun! For those who love driving, you’ll love the challenge of navigating the soft sand and following the tire marks in front of you. I actually find this safer than driving on highways because you definitely won’t be falling asleep. There are also multiple stops along the way because…
(2) You are literally on paradise
Even when you look awkward
Everywhere you look is Instagram worthy. For some reason, mother earth decided to condense everything beautiful onto the UNESCO World Heritage listed Fraser island. There are walls of coloured sands, the abandoned Maheno shipwreck, a lone lighthouse, rainforests, sand dunes, lookout points like Indian Head, and dozens of…
(3) Lakes and creeks to swim in
From Eli Creek to the popular Lake Mckenzie, we could have easily spent an entire day swimming and chilling. Nothing is more refreshing and energising than a dip in nature. And have I mentioned…
This was literally the view outside our accommodation at Eurong beach resort. If the weather holds up, sunset on Fraser Island will be something you’ll remember for the rest of your life. The pinkish coloured skies on one side, and the perfect reflection of the skies on the other. The reflection is only possible because fresh water seeps out from the center of the Island while the tides recede during this time. Nature’s work of art at her best. But no trip will be complete without…
(5) Friendships being built and reforged
Maybe it’s something about being on a road trip in paradise (or it could just be the alcohol from the resort bar :X), but I made many new friends in this short 3D2N self drive tour. I guess being stuck in a car with 6 people from all over the world, and everyone forcing everyone else to listen to their favourite music inevitably bonds people. You learn a lot about people while you’re traveling 24/7 and it’s great that I had such awesome car mates. :)
