Epic South America in 3 mins – Walk, Bump, Discover
4 countries, 76 days, US$4.9k, and tons of activities packed into 3 minutes on my GoPro. Check out the full budget breakdown and secrets to how I managed to keep my costs low too.
This South America trip to Brazil, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador is by far the most epic of all trips I’ve done. From the Iguazu Falls, Uyuni Salt Flats, to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands, there are breathtaking landscapes and activities in every country.
As with everywhere I go, I try to walk and take public transport whenever it’s possible (and safe enough). Not only do you save money, but you get to bump into locals and discover the little nooks and crannies of the place. This time I also tried to use the excuse that I was making a fist bumping video to break the ice whenever I meet new people. Sorry if I fist bumped you and it’s not inside! It was impossible to include everyone. :P
There is so much more I would like to share in the video, but I guess it will have to be left for next time.
Anyway, in case you’re wondering, these are the places I’ve visited in order of appearance after the intro. Click on the link to read more about my experience!
Bolivia – 0:34 to 1:09
Salar de Uyuni Salt Flats; La Paz (World’s Most Dangerous Road); Sucre; Potosi Mines
Brazil – 1:10 to 1:56
Pantanal; Bonito (Rio de Prata); Iguazu Falls; Rio de Janeiro (Paragliding); Cuiaba (World Cup 14)
Peru – 1:57 to 2:14
Huacachina (Sandboarding); Machu Picchu
Ecuador – 2:15 to 2:57
Alausi (Devil’s Nose Railway); Banôs (Outdoors); Cotopaxi; Galápagos Islands
Hope this inspires you to travel to South America one day. Honestly, it isn’t as dangerous as what everyone says! Just be travel savvy and everything will be ok. Drop a comment if you have any questions. :)

heya!
S.America tops my buckets list but the only thing thats really stopping me now is my parents and peers are super scare for my safety cause i’m a girl and the sex crimes in S.America is quite high. But anyways, that aside, any travel / cultural tips we should look out for when travelling around S.America?
I can’t really say how it’ll be like because definitely you ladies will attract more attention.
But generally safety is ok. In my opinion at least, petty crime is a lot higher in places like Rome, Barcelona and Athens in Europe. But I mean if you are really unlucky, violent crime is worse in SA as well. Just take the usual precautions, hang out in groups, keep valuables out of sight, be alert and it’ll be fine! Maybe I was lucky, but I never had a single problem there. Stuff I heard happen is when travellers don’t take the advice of the locals. Certain places, even locals won’t go unless they are in big groups. Just ask and everything will be ok. :)
Nothing in particular actually. Just avoid taking pictures of strangers without permission, have an open mind, and smile more. Other than Wayna Picchu and the Inca Trail, most tours can be booked when you are there to save money. Oh yes! DBS (Singapore) blocks Peru ATMS so be sure to call the bank to activate this. Some ATMS in Ecuador also uses a 4pin code only. Not sure how it works but maybe can ask the bank.
hey!
I really enjoyed your video! I’m sure you had a really good time doing all those activities. I’m from Ecuador and for anyone that is thinking of going on a trip through South America I highly recomend it! It’s not as dangerous as people use to talk so don’t be afraid of a new adventure. I’m sure you are going to have the best trip ever!
Hey Carolina, yes I agree with you and that’s what I have been telling people as well!

Hendric!! Awesome, awesome stuff. Looks like you had great fun – is the trip over now? I was hoping to see some Argentina, Venezuela and Chile. But hey – you’ve tackled four really amazing countries that are very high on my bucket list. South America is just too perfect for words. =)
Hey Andrew! Yup Been over for awhile now :/. It’s a very interesting thing place to travel to. You should head there too!
Awesome video man, you come across as quite a daredevil. Some of the activities are definitely not for the faint-hearted!
Which was the ‘scariest’ experience for you?
Hey man,
It looks like the exact same trip I went on and we probably just missed each other on the way. Your budget was only half of mine though, would be really interested to find out more about how you did it!
I spent SGD$12k in 65 days of South America. The biggest holes in my pocket were Inca Trail, World Cup Final and the semi final.
Check out my video too, your editing skills are much better though.

Amazing! Thanks for sharing your adventure with us; I felt so inspired after watching your video! Awesome video editing skills too!
What footwear did you bring with you/wear during your trip to South America? I’m thinking about only bringing a pair of flip-flops (for when it rains/at the beach) and a pair of Vans (for everything else).
Thanks Tony!
I too brought a pair of flip-flops and walking sneakers. However I also suggest bringing some trekking or sports shoes in case you do anything more. I had a Timberland trail running shoe as well.
Hey Hendric,
You’ve inspired me to stop procrastinating and take action. Thanks to you, I’ve gone on my own solo adventure throughout 3 South American countries earlier this year. I’ve linked your blog in my video description, check it out!
