I know life isn’t about lists, but I made one midway through college anyway. One of those goals was to break into top 3 for HOCC (Hall Olympiad Closing Ceremony) Dance with Srethgie (btw it’s eighters spelled backwards!).
Although it didn’t quite happen during my time (best was 4th :/ ), that dream finally became reality a year after graduating. And not just that, Srethgie became CHAMPIONS for the very first time! We seniors were sitting together with the team when the results were announced, and boy did all hell break lose. Words can never quite describe the euphoria, but i remember the screams of joy, lots of hugging, tears and one big Srethgie family cheering non stop with the rest of the hall. I felt so proud.
Here’s the magic.
All the other halls did really well too. Loved the performance from Unific as usual, but I thought 2, 4, 12, and 16 (to name a few) were beautiful in their own ways too. The standards just keep rising every year and it’s really heartwarming to see the MJ juniors shine and improve on stage. That said, my all time favourite still has to be Unific’s heart touching piece last year. I hardly ever cry, but watching that piece really brought tears to my eyes. (watch it here if you haven’t!)
There’s always something different and special about hall dance compared to other competitions and concerts. Like what Jinghan said during the final Srethgie debrief (which i shamelessly sat in) that night, hall dance is a lot about being inclusive and helping others discover their passion for dance. Doing well is a bonus, but spreading the joys of dance by giving the dancers a positive experience, and the audience a good show is what really matters. In fact life should be more like that.
Anyway back to Srethgie, I was really happy that we retained our style of wanting to entertain. For me, it started with our ridiculous ninja themed performance two years ago. From crazy hair and bobbing heads to faster harder choreo, that was the year where Srethgie started growing for many of the seniors.
The following year, we maxed out our epic faces in a prisoner and nurse love story that despite making no sense, milked so much laughter and entertained the crowd. We started pushing more too in terms of dance and I felt really sad as it was my last year dancing with Srethgie.
This year, I heard the original plan was to do a more conceptual and technical piece but look what happened (BaoQingTian even made an appearance). Despite seeing the rehearsals and knowing what to expect, I still laughed and sat in awe when you guys took the stage and shined.
To be honest (and I think some of you guys knew), I was terribly jealous of what you guys had going and really wished to be a part of Srethgie again (lyndsey can testify to that). Like riana last year, I couldn’t let go and tried keeping up with what’s happening as much as possible. But sitting in the games room watching the performance with you guys one last time helped me realise something. I was liberated. Living vicariously through you guys have completed a huge part of my uni life. Thank you for the love and messages that followed after, you know who you guys are.
To the old ninja birds, thank you for bringing me into this family and giving me a place to dance without fear.
To the young jail birds and nurses, thank you for bringing Srethgie to greater heights with me and continuing the culture. (But seriously walau, why last year we no thank you notes and letters. lol. we so bad mehh)
To the new birds, remember this feeling and keep the spirit going. Otherwise Riana will come back and become angry bird.
Love you guys.
